I tried a couple times to find the #comettsuchinshanatlas to no avail. Either it was poor conditions or bad timing or myriad other reasons. Last night I was determined to find it despite the rapidly rising moon, especially since it was likely in the same frame as the Milky Way. Quite possibly the last of the season!

After just coming home from an epic tour to Iceland with my co-leader @allierichardsphoto for @bluehourusa_ I felt spoiled. Spoiled in that we saw amazing aurora displays. I have always wanted to get these types of aerial shots of the braided rivers. And finally had the opportunity to take an @flightseeing flight. Amazing experience. If you find yourself near Skaftafell you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you don’t go yourself!! 45 minutes of bliss above the rivers and glacier

It was the night before the last day of our tour. I was all packed and ready to go to bed. My aurora app was blowing up with alerts. Having been cloudy much of the day I didn’t pay much attention as surely it was in another area of the country. When the sheep drew my attention outside I noticed a bit of whispy light. I stuck my phone out the window to take a pic just for the heck of it. What in the world???? Alert the group! Unpack the tripod! Let’s go! 

Rarely do we have the opportunity to witness the dance of the Northern Lights against a clear sky while simultaneously marveling at the Milky Way. I captured this view from a glacier lagoon in the southeast of Iceland. Given the midnight sun in Iceland is during the prime viewing time of the core in the northern hemisphere, it is truly a rare occurence to see both the Milky Way and the Aurora. This year’s MW season I didn’t have the opportunity to capture it in New England, what with recovery from last year’s accident and inopportune cloudy evenings during the New Moon, I thought this year was a wash. But the other night was a treat! Not only were there clear skies, and a new moon, but a substorm, so both were visible in the same direction! Ah, what a cherry on top of a fabulous @bluehourusa_ tour!

One year ago today, my life changed in ways I could have never imagined. I don’t remember taking this photo, but it captures a moment in time of which the after effects I’ll never forget. This is a scene I’ve passed countless times, hoping to fly my drone, but the weather always had ways to dash that plan. The day I don’t remember is the day the weather was ok for flying apparently. It took me many many months to even look at the photos in the drone. The only reason I knew to look was I was shown a photo of me flying. I don’t know what I was thinking when I captured this shot, but I pieced together that I took a vertical panorama based on the images in the drone. 

As I reflect on this past year, I’m reminded of how fragile life is and how important it is to cherish every moment. I’m still healing, still growing, and still finding my way forward. I’m so grateful to be here today, surrounded by love, and stronger than ever. 

To our children Jess and Luke - you are our greatest gift and dad and I cherish you every single day. Your strength is legendary. We could not have gotten here without you. 
To Courtney - you and I were thrust into a club together in the middle of all this and I’m so proud and grateful for you. 
To little Chris - the never ending source of joy and happiness.  You are the absolute best medicine Pappou and I could have. 
To Lauri - your selflessness is bar none. I don’t know what I would have done without all your help. Your ability to learn nursing skills on the fly is incredible.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey with me. I really appreciate all of you who have reached out to Chris and me, checked on our children, kept us in your prayers and all the acts of kindness we continue to be overwhelmed by.
